EHCP Support

Contact us

EHCP Support helps parents understand, navigate and manage the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process.

The goal is to make sure your child receives the right support in school, based on their needs.

At Lycali, we break the process down into clear, manageable steps, providing guidance, advocacy and reassurance every step of the way.

EHCP Support for Children age 4-25

What is an EHCP?

An EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) is a legal document in the UK that describes a child or young person’s special educational needs (SEN) and the support they must receive.

Who Is Our Service For?

Parents and carers who need help understanding or navigating the EHCP process for children aged 4–25.

Whether you’re:

Just starting and unsure what to do

In the middle of the process and feeling overwhelmed

Holding a Draft EHCP that doesn’t reflect your child

Experiencing delays or refusals from the Local Authority

Why Choose Us?

Our service is grounded in neuro-affirming and SEN practice. We value lived experience and individual voice. We avoid generic labels and instead focus on what really helps each person thrive.

We offer support with 5 key areas of the EHCP journey

1. Understanding Needs

Helping you gather the right information about your child’s learning needs, behaviour, strengths and difficulties.

2. Evidence & Assessments

Guidance on what reports you need (EP, SALT, OT, medical), how to access them, and how they strengthen your child’s case.

3. Written Contributions

Writing the parental contribution, professional letters, and supporting documents in a way that is clear, factual and powerful.

4. Draft EHCP Review

Checking Section A–K, identifying what’s missing, and rewriting parts to ensure they are accurate, quantified and legally enforceable.

5. Final Plan & Next Steps

Making sure the final plan is strong, that your child’s provision is clear, and advising you on appeals or placement discussions if needed.

How does the EHCP Support Process Work?

1. Initial Consultation

A calm, supportive conversation where we:

· Talk through your child’s needs

· Explain how the process works

· Identify what stage you are at

· Build a clear plan of action

You’ll leave knowing exactly what happens next.

2. Evidence Gathering

We help you understand:

· Which reports you already have

· What further assessments may help

· How to gather supporting information

· What the LA needs to make a decision

This step removes the guesswork.

3. Requesting an EHC Needs Assessment (if needed)

If an assessment hasn’t been started yet, we:

· Write the request letter

· Help you submit it

· Explain the 6-week decision timeline

· Prepare you for what the LA may ask for

This starts the statutory process.

4. During the Needs Assessment

Over the next several weeks, the Local Authority should gather:

· Educational Psychology report

· SALT, OT or medical reports (if needed)

· School evidence

· Parent views

· Child views

We: ✔ Check reports for accuracy ✔ Ensure nothing important is missed ✔ Help you challenge gaps in evidence

5. Draft EHCP Review

When the LA sends the first draft, we:

· Review every section (A–K)

· Rewrite parts that are unclear, vague or inaccurate

· Strengthen Section B (needs)

· Strengthen Section F (provision)

· Add missing outcomes

· Prepare a full list of amendments for the LA

This is the step that has the biggest impact on your child’s support.

6. Final EHCP & Next Steps

We check that:

· All amendments have been added

· Provision is quantified (“how often”, “by who”, “for how long”)

· Your child’s needs are accurately described

· The placement is appropriate

If the LA refuses amendments or the school place, we guide you on:

· Mediation

· Appeal routes

· Next steps in the process

How long is the EHCP process?

The statutory timeline in the UK is 20 weeks, broken down into:

· 6 weeks → decision to assess

· 10 weeks → gathering reports

· 4 weeks → draft + final plan

Delays are common — we help you challenge them when needed.

Who provides the support?

An experienced professional delivers support with:

· In-depth understanding of SEN

· Experience working with families and local authorities

· Knowledge of current law and statutory guidance

· A calm, friendly, parent-centred approach

You’ll always know who you’re speaking to, and you’ll never be passed around.

How are the sessions set up?

Support can be offered: ✔ 1–1 online (Teams) ✔ By telephone ✔ By email ✔

We adapt the process to suit your needs.
