Adult Psychological Therapies & Counselling (18+)
Personalised, compassionate and evidence-informed psychological support for adults. Explore your experiences in a confidential, collaborative environment, develop greater self-understanding and work towards meaningful changes in emotional wellbeing and daily life.
Welcome to Lycali's Psychological Therapies
People seek psychological therapy for many different reasons. You may be experiencing anxiety, low mood, stress, burnout, relationship difficulties, changes in circumstances or experiences that feel difficult to manage.
Our multidisciplinary practitioners offer personalised psychological support based on your experiences, strengths, needs and goals.
We recognise that psychological wellbeing can be shaped by neurodivergence, physical health, past experiences, relationships, work, education and the environments around us.
You can seek psychological support without having a confirmed mental health or neurodevelopmental diagnosis.
Therapy focuses on understanding your experiences and identifying appropriate ways to support your wellbeing.
Important: Before Your First Appointment
All required registration, consent and pre-session questionnaires must be completed before your initial therapeutic assessment or therapy session can take place.
Please read your welcome letter, terms and conditions and invoice carefully. If mandatory documentation is outstanding, an appointment may need to be rearranged.

Additional Questionnaires & Outcome Measures
Your practitioner may request additional measures depending on your concerns, clinical presentation and therapeutic goals.
- Measures of anxiety.
- Mood and depression questionnaires.
- Emotional wellbeing measures.
- Trauma-related measures, where appropriate.
- Quality-of-life questionnaires.
- Goal-based outcome measures.
- Self-reflection and progress questionnaires.
Any required additional questionnaires will be issued through WriteUpp.
Please check your inbox, junk and spam folders for correspondence.
They support clinical understanding, therapy planning and review of progress.
The results are considered alongside your experiences and the wider clinical assessment. Questionnaires alone do not determine a diagnosis.
Choosing the Right Practitioner
Lycali works with appropriately qualified practitioners with different professional backgrounds, training and clinical interests.
Your referral will be considered alongside your preferences, therapeutic goals, presenting difficulties and the complexity of support required.
Clinical Psychologist
Clinical psychologists may be appropriate where there are complex or overlapping psychological difficulties, longstanding concerns or a need for specialist formulation.
Depending on their individual competencies, they may use CBT, ACT, systemic, narrative or other evidence-informed psychological approaches.
Psychotherapist
Psychotherapists may support emotional difficulties, relational patterns, trauma-related experiences, identity, longstanding psychological concerns and challenges affecting daily life.
Individual practitioners have different areas of specialist training and experience.
Counsellor
Counsellors may provide a supportive space to explore emotional experiences, stress, relationship difficulties, low confidence, bereavement and life changes.
Counselling may be helpful where you want to develop understanding, explore difficulties and identify healthier coping strategies.
These are general descriptions, not fixed referral rules.
We consider clinical complexity, practitioner competence, professional registration where applicable, experience, safeguarding considerations and your individual preferences.
If a different service or more specialist assessment is appropriate, this will be discussed.
Your Initial Therapeutic Assessment
Your first appointment provides an opportunity for the practitioner to understand your experiences, current concerns and goals.
The discussion will be guided by your individual circumstances and the type of therapy being considered.
- Current emotional wellbeing.
- Anxiety, worries and stress.
- Low mood or depression.
- Confidence and self-esteem.
- Relationships and family experiences.
- Workplace or educational pressures.
- Life changes, loss or bereavement.
- Trauma-related experiences where relevant.
- Neurodivergence and individual differences.
- Current coping strategies.
- Relevant mental and physical health factors.
- Safety and risk considerations.
- Your goals and expectations for therapy.
You will ordinarily attend your therapeutic assessment independently.
If you would like a partner, family member or trusted supporter to attend part of the appointment, please discuss this with the clinician beforehand.
Your preferences and consent will guide their involvement.
Therapy is intended to provide a private and supportive environment.
Your practitioner will explain confidentiality, how information is recorded, any agreed information sharing and the circumstances where information may need to be disclosed for safety or legal reasons.
Information will not routinely be shared with family members, employers or other individuals without an appropriate basis.
Following assessment, your practitioner will discuss the most appropriate therapeutic approach, proposed goals and session arrangements.
Choosing a Therapeutic Approach
Different therapeutic models offer different ways of understanding experiences and supporting psychological wellbeing.
The most suitable approach will depend on your concerns, preferences, goals and the practitioner's specialist training.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT examines connections between thoughts, emotions, behaviours and everyday situations.
It may help with anxiety, low mood, stress, avoidance and developing practical coping skills.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT focuses on developing psychological flexibility, responding differently to difficult thoughts and emotions, clarifying personal values and taking meaningful action.
Narrative Therapy
Narrative approaches explore the stories people hold about themselves and their experiences.
This may support self-understanding, identity and developing alternative perspectives on difficulties.
Systemic Therapy
Systemic approaches consider relationships, family systems, communication patterns and wider environments.
This may be useful where relational or contextual factors contribute to psychological difficulties.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that may be appropriate for some trauma-related psychological difficulties.
It is delivered only by practitioners with relevant specialist training.
DBT & DBT-Informed Approaches
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and DBT-informed skills may support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, relationships and managing intense emotions.
Full DBT programmes have specific treatment components and should not be confused with standalone DBT-informed strategies.
Person-Centred Counselling
Person-centred counselling offers a supportive, collaborative space in which to explore feelings, experiences and personal challenges.
It focuses on empathy, understanding and the therapeutic relationship.
You do not need to decide on a therapeutic model before contacting Lycali.
Our team and the practitioner can discuss the most suitable options with you.
Not every practitioner provides every model, and availability will depend on training, expertise and clinical suitability.
Ongoing Therapy Sessions
If ongoing therapy is recommended, sessions will be personalised to your goals, circumstances and the agreed therapeutic approach.
Therapy may involve reflective discussion, practical exercises, exploring patterns or learning new psychological strategies.
- Understanding and managing anxiety.
- Supporting mood and emotional wellbeing.
- Developing emotional regulation strategies.
- Improving self-esteem and confidence.
- Managing stress and burnout.
- Exploring relationships and boundaries.
- Processing difficult experiences where appropriate.
- Understanding neurodivergent needs and identity.
- Developing coping and problem-solving skills.
- Adapting to change and life transitions.
- Supporting grief and bereavement.
- Improving day-to-day participation and wellbeing.
The number and frequency of sessions will depend on your goals and support needs.
Some people benefit from a short structured block, while others require longer-term therapy.
Your practitioner will discuss a suitable plan and review progress with you.
Additional sessions and associated fees will be agreed before booking.
Progress Review & Next Steps
Your progress will be reviewed collaboratively during therapy.
Reviews help ensure the approach remains suitable and responsive to your needs.
- Progress towards agreed therapeutic goals.
- Changes in emotional wellbeing.
- Strategies that have been helpful.
- Changes in confidence or daily functioning.
- New or continuing areas of difficulty.
- Feedback on the therapeutic approach.
- Whether ongoing therapy is needed.
- Further specialist support where appropriate.
Where appropriate, the practitioner may recommend additional sessions, a different therapeutic approach, multidisciplinary input or onward referral.
A formal report is not automatically included with counselling or psychological therapy.
If you require a written summary or report, please discuss this with Lycali beforehand.
Any applicable report-writing fees will be confirmed before additional work is undertaken.
Therapy Fees & Additional Charges (If They Apply)
The cost of your initial therapeutic assessment and ongoing sessions will be confirmed before booking and detailed in your invoice.
Fees may vary according to the practitioner, appointment type and agreed therapeutic service.
Some appointments may involve additional travel or external clinic hire costs.
These charges do not apply to every appointment.
They may be relevant where a practitioner travels to another agreed location or where external clinic space is required away from Lycali's main Broadstairs base.
If additional charges apply, they will be confirmed before booking and clearly outlined in your invoice.
Separately requested reports or additional professional work will also be discussed and agreed in advance.
