Psychosocial Assessment & Intervention
Practical support for everyday life.
Psychosocial Intervention (PSI) is practical, goal-directed support for children, young people and adults who would benefit from help to make meaningful change in everyday life. Alongside this, a Psychosocial Needs Assessment can provide a fuller understanding where needs or barriers are more complex or not yet clear.

Psychosocial Needs Assessment
Understanding the whole person, their strengths, needs and everyday functioning.
A Psychosocial Needs Assessment is for when a broader understanding is needed of what is happening, the factors that may be contributing, and the support that may help.
Lycali’s Psychosocial Needs Assessment is a holistic, neuro-affirming and strengths-based assessment for children, young people and adults with neurodevelopmental needs, whether formally identified or currently being explored.
Rather than looking at one difficulty in isolation, we consider the individual within the context of their everyday life, relationships, environment and support network. This gives us a fuller, more useful picture of both need and possibility.
What might the assessment explore?
- Strengths, needs and current difficulties
- Everyday functioning and participation
- Emotional wellbeing and neurodevelopmental impact
- Routines, organisation and executive functioning
- Relationships, support networks and social participation
- Education, employment, home and community functioning
- Environmental, sensory and practical barriers
What does it involve?
Assessment is tailored rather than one-size-fits-all. It may include direct sessions, review of relevant information, appropriate outcome measures, observation in relevant environments, and liaison with family members or professionals where appropriate and with consent. The information is brought together into an integrated formulation that helps make sense of the person’s current situation.
Psychosocial Needs Assessment is not a diagnostic assessment. Where a specialist or diagnostic assessment may be helpful, this can be included in the recommendations.
Psychosocial Intervention
Practical, goal-directed support for meaningful change in everyday life.
Psychosocial Intervention is for when an area of difficulty or meaningful goal has been identified and the individual would benefit from structured, practical support to make change happen.
Support that works in real life
We work collaboratively with the individual to understand what is getting in the way, develop practical strategies, try these in real-life settings and adapt the approach according to what works for them.
The focus is not on making someone appear less neurodivergent. It is on supporting meaningful participation, wellbeing and sustainable change in a way that respects identity, strengths and circumstances.
Intervention can help with:
- School, college or workplace participation
- Anxiety or overwhelm affecting everyday activities
- Avoidance, demands, routines and transitions
- Organisation and executive functioning
- Accessing activities, relationships and the community
- Communication, self-advocacy and confidence
- Age-appropriate independence and responsibilities
How intervention works
Small, achievable steps towards what matters to you.
Identify goals
We agree meaningful, realistic goals together and establish what progress would look like.
Understand barriers
We explore the patterns, needs and environmental factors making those goals difficult.
Develop strategies
We create individualised approaches and break larger goals into manageable steps.
Review & adapt
Strategies are tested, reviewed and adapted, building on strengths and what works.
For children, young people & adults
Flexible support, in the settings that make sense.
Both services are available for children (approximately 4-12 years), adolescents and young people (approximately 13-17 years), and adults (18+). The approach is adapted to age, development, communication needs and individual circumstances.
Depending on the agreed goals, sessions may be online, at a Lycali clinic in Kent, at home, in education, in the community, at work where appropriate, or in another relevant everyday setting.
